Summary
A and S rank missions are killers - especially the kind Tsunade hands out since she's been made Godaime. Kakashi has handled some pretty rough ones over the years with his teams, wow, he could tell you stories...
But his team is gone. He's no longer a Jounin-sensei and he no longer has to watch over a bunch of brats. Now his missions are ANBU level.
ANBU missions are different. The view through that mask is narrow. There is nothing to protect, only targets to kill. There is no mercy, no regret, no remorse. No prisoners. It's very simple, really. Considerably simpler than being a Jounin-sensei. If only Gai didn't insist on joining his rival/friend/partner around on these, it'd be simpler still.

There was nothing objectively special about that date. It wasn’t a holiday or a birthday (at least not Kakashi’s or Tenzō’s). It wasn’t the anniversary of any large battle, nor was it precisely the summer solstice.
But it was, unquestionably, the day that Kakashi had chosen to thank Tenzō, year after year.

“You could have a life as Yamato still,” Kakashi continued quietly, “see Naruto and Sai when they’re in the village, eat at Ichiraku, have Sakura hound you at the hospital.” He paused. “You could find someone to share that life with. If you wanted it, there would be time.”

Summary
Gai is very enthusiastic about his friends Asuma and Kurenai getting their own students after he's had Team Gai for a year. He wants to challenge his friends and their students to a most youthful competition about nurturing the next generation's Will of Fire.
A scoreboard is set up, with their students' names at the bottom and the sensei's on the top. Whenever their students do something to show their growth as a ninja, their name gets moved up and a note about their accomplishment gets added.
The other two, Asuma and Kurenai, add their names next to Gai's and those of their students next to that of Team Gai's.
The friendly competition can begin!
Then the next day, they see Hatake Kakashi next to their names. He has finally passed a team.
