Ava walked back to the window, staring out at the city lights. The vibrant energy of the city seemed to mock her own emptiness. She felt like a ghost, haunting the edges of her own life, watching the world go by without her.
She reached out, her fingers tracing the cold glass. A single tear rolled down her cheek, leaving a streak on the window. She looked at her reflection, barely recognizing the woman staring back at her. The spark was gone, the fire extinguished. All that remained was a hollow echo of the woman she used to be.
The wedding photo on the mantelpiece caught her eye. It was a picture from their wedding day, a candid shot taken during their first dance. Ava was laughing, her head thrown back, her eyes sparkling with joy. Beatrice was looking at her with an expression of such pure, unadulterated love that it made Ava's chest ache.
They were so happy then. So in love. So full of hope.
Now, all that remained were fractured vows and hollow echoes.
Ava closed her eyes, a single, devastating thought echoing in her mind: Where did we go wrong? And, more terrifyingly: Can we ever find our way back?

A part of her hoped Bea was looking as she revealed the bare arms underneath, flexing them under the pretence of limbering up. “Now, give me a boost.”
