They argued the next day. She wanted to go back, to kill the Mask Keeper. To avenge Lune and Sciel, to do anything to satisfy the burning anger that consumed her, anything to drown out the guilt. Verso refused. He said that the expedition had failed, they had failed, that he’d told them it was too dangerous. His anger fed hers in a vicious cycle.
The days blurred into weeks. She dreamed of them – of Sciel’s smile, of Lune’s wit, of Gustave’s laugh. The dreams always turned into nightmares, watching them die over and over, always too late to help, always watching uselessly to the side. She avoided sleep until she collapsed.
Or: what if the expedition failed. What if Sciel and Lune died fighting the Mask Keeper and the barrier was never broken. What if Maelle was all that was left of Expedition 33
