“Karen?” he asks, gripping the phone tight to his ear, “What happened? What’s wrong?”
It’s loud, wherever she is. He can hear shouting, the barking of orders. He can hear her trying to start a sentence and failing.
Shit.
The dread hits him all at once.
“Who?” the word leaves his throat harsh, a burning scrape. Like a command.
He’s in his kitchen, in El Paso, the contents of his cabinets are scattered around him, and he knows with a sickening kind of certainty that somebody he loves is dead.
“I’m sorry,” Karen finally says, thickly, “Eddie, it’s Bobby. He’s gone.”
or, Bobby dies and Eddie and Chris finally come home.
