    “....” he stared at him for a while. The child quietly waited. He shouldn’t keep the bus driver waiting either. “Kids shouldn’t be out at this hour. Just come with me.”

     

    “...i can’t pay the fare.”

     

    “You can pay me back.” he paused. “Help me clean my apartment building. I’ll feed you in return, too, and I’ll drive you home once the rain stops.”

     

    Normally, a child wouldn’t trust such obviously suspicious words. The words of their parents, warning them against strangers, would ring over and over in their head and they’d politely decline or even run away. Even the bus driver looked up for a moment from under his cap.

     

    However, this skinny child had no parents to teach him about things like that, and no home he’d like to return to. Kim Roksoo knew this was the case better than anyone.
