Gods, she hates him. Hates him bitterly for leaving her behind. And Gods, how she loves him, still. Enough to have dragged herself to Waterdeep, as per his wishes. Enough to have let Tara coddle her those first few days. Enough to have sobbed into Morena Dekarios’ waiting arms. Enough to speak to him every evening from the balcony he had promised they would share. Enough to have started reading each of his books, knowing his fingers had touched every page. Enough to imagine all the ways he might’ve reacted to the news of his impending fatherhood. The latter she lingers on more than she would like, for it only gives way to other, saccharine fantasies she knows will never come to fruition.

Summary
“He saw me, where Mystra didn’t.”
It’s late now. Astarion sits with Gale beneath the starless night and watches him polish his sword. A slip of the blade draws blood; unfazed, Gale brings his finger to his lips, and tastes it with naked rapture. In the waning moonlight, the rot is more obvious than ever before. It snakes past his waistband, branches over his throat.
Astarion hums softly. “Bhaal?”
A nod. “He saved me.” Gale shuts his eyes. “He talks to me. Listens to me, understands me, believes in me, rewards and respects and adores me.”
A pause. Overhead, the wind is silent.
“He loves me. And in turn, I grant him my devotion.”
In search of a cure for the tadpole in his head, Astarion encounters Bhaal's newest Chosen, and finds himself biting off far more than he can chew.

Gale returns to Waterdeep, to the woman he barely knows but has been betrothed to for two decades, leaving behind a heartbroken Tav in Baldur's Gate.

The parchment is expensive. Tav runs her fingertips over the wax seal and hesitates; she knows what this is. She is not surprised that it is happening, she is, however, surprised at being included in some way. Perhaps, she allows herself, she had hoped it wouldn't be so soon. (She has already put to bed the part of herself that had hoped it would not happen at all.) Gale had, after all, been very clear - and devastatingly gentle - in his explanation.
