Summary
"You're not my father, for Christ's sake!" Sherlock screamed back, hurt by Mycroft's admittedly crass words.
"At this rate, I might as well be."
"You certainly sound like him."-----------------
Those five words are all it takes for Sherlock to push too far, tearing through Mycroft's defences and dragging his most carefully guarded secret into the open.

Summary
“I do not care for games, Mr. Moriarty—though I imagine you know that as well.”
“But you are capable of playing them.”
“Rather,” Mycroft said. “I know that you are propositioning me because you cannot have him.”
Moriarty faltered, just for a second. “Perhaps I simply aspire to the set.”
It was Mycroft’s turn to smile. “And you do not believe achieving that is possible. You are more transparent than you think.”

Summary
For a moment or two he felt the warmth of his mother again, an arm wrapped around him to hold him close. He was just ten years old, but now as a big brother, he already seemed to have found his place in the world. He was never meant to be taken care of. He was the caretaker. Tucking his mother in after she'd fallen asleep, calming his brother when he was crying and predicting the storms of his father's temper.
If this house was to know peace, it would have to be Mycroft's job to keep it.+ + +
Mycroft Holmes had always been a quiet man. He had also been a quiet child, learning early on that he had to be silently obedient, to not cause any trouble for himself. If only that could save him. If only he could be perfectly still until the storms passed and then he would have done well enough.
Life was never easy like that. It wasn't fair either.
If it had been, he would not believe his worth to be dependent on his usefulness. If his life had been entirely different, maybe he would be good.
Like this he was just an older brother and a first born son.Bookmarked by Wills_works

Summary
Soon enough, Mother and James come searching for him, and after a lot of fussing ("I’ll be quite alright, Mother, it could have been a multitude of degrees worse than what it happens to be,") James chases after the rest of the group and silence commences as the world holds its breath for the inevitable outcome of the prosecution of Silas Holmes.
There are birds chirping a song of freedom into the settling dust of the quarry behind, with, almost as an afterthought, the added pinch of bittersweet victory that hides under the thick layers of nature.
Sherlock always was the more beloved brother — after Beatrice disappeared, or even before, maybe — at least in Silas’s eyes, and for that time Silas’s opinion was perhaps the only one that mattered.
or: Mycroft gets injured in the factory in episode 8 and has some time to do some thinking.
