Summary
Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp have been each other’s worst nightmare since the day they stumbled into the same grimy talent agency lobby, fresh-faced and hungry for fame, over the years, they’ve stolen roles, sabotaged auditions, and turned every red carpet into a battlefield of fake smiles and whispered insults that the cameras never catch.
They were supposed to keep hating each other from a safe distance, until Hollywood in its infinite cruelty, casts them as soulmates in a sweeping romance a lot of people asked for. The studio offers them more money than either can refuse, so now they’re stuck side by side, pretending to fall in love while everyone watches.

Helen’s next words slipped out soft, measured, cruel in their gentleness.
“It feels good to get that off my chest,” she said, her tone featherlight, but her eyes still locked on Madeline’s. “I really do wish you both the best. It was never meant to be between me and Ernest, I know. But sometimes I like to imagine it could have been… something else between me and you.”
Madeline looked at her then — really looked — and saw the glimmer of cruelty beneath the softness. The way Helen could make tenderness feel like a knife, offered and twisted in the same motion.
“I must be boring you senseless,” Helen said, almost pouting now, as if to soften the wound she’d just carved. “I’m just so glad you both could come. It’s truly lovely to see the kind of woman you’ve become.”
Her lips curved into a feline smile, deliberate as sin. “Whoopsie. Did I just say come twice?”
She lifted her glass, eyes never leaving Madeline’s. “Cheers, darling. I’m so glad we did this.”

A crack of energy split the air as a stray blast from the feuding villains above struck dangerously close. Helen reacted instantly, shoving a group of stragglers behind a toppled table.
The crowd gasped.
“She saved them,” one whispered.
But another hissed, “No—look at her. It's a strategy. She’s corralling us.”
Helen’s blood ran hot with frustration. “I am not corralling you—I am—”
“Plotting?” Madeline suggested sweetly, stepping closer, her presence a deliberate distraction. She leaned in just enough that Helen could smell the faint, bitter citrus of her drink. “Oh, sweetheart, the optics are terrible for you tonight.”
“Stop calling me sweetheart.”
Madeline smirked. “Then stop blushing when I do.”
Helen flushed harder, with anger, she insisted to herself, only anger, then the rooftop shook again.
