Everyone around her is celebrating, and yet the moment feels strangely reminiscent of the day Shadowheart and her friends danced and sang with the tieflings in the Emerald Grove. Once again, Shadowheart feels adrift and confused, the wine working its way into her veins and numbing the dread for what is to come tomorrow. She has no family and little faith to guide her, and everyone else seems to have a plan for what's next—everyone else but Minthara.

He stared at her. When their eyes locked, something crackled in the air as if the stars themselves had burst into flames.

He slowly rose to his feet. She'd never seen this kind of look on his face; the light in his eyes had gone dim, eyelids twitching, gaze wet and shimmering. She was sure the same look was reflected on her face.
"Why do you have to make things so difficult?"
