Summary
“Where do you want to go?” Owens asks with a faint smile but transparent eyes that give his true feelings away. Remorse. He knows she’s making an impossible choice.
El considers his question for a moment. She could go anywhere in the world but the one place she wants to be more than anything. El opens her mouth to speak, but hesitates briefly. “Do you know if there is a place with beautiful landscapes? a-and maybe.. three waterfalls?” Her voice betrays her before she even realizes she’s crying.
Owens looks at her with concern and nods calmly, “Yeah, I'll look into it kid”.
If El can’t be with Mike, at least she can have a little fragment of that dream. A tiny piece of it to feel just a little bit at home wherever she ends up.

He’s seen her look tired before — burnt out, and disheveled. When she’d come back from closing the gate, he’d wiped the blood out from underneath her nose, crusted and dry. There were veins by her eyelids, blue and purple and visible under the unnatural paleness of her skin. She’d looked tired. But that was exhaustion. But this isn’t the same. This lingering cloud that’s been hovering over her all night — the weighty guilt of it in her face. This is new for her. This is defeat.
This scares him more.
