He stood before them in a bar and said he was like them.
The others didn’t know, but Gavin believed. What they couldn’t even begin to sense to know. It had been a long time since he had met someone older than himself, not since the Dragon on the cliff.
They’d later tease him for being scared of Ryan at first. They couldn’t understand the creature before them. They couldn’t feel the vibrating energy of agelessness, they couldn’t see the roiling cracks in him, see the hints of the turbulent black hole inside. They couldn’t feel the empires that had risen and fallen to dust. They couldn’t see the strength and pain and defiance.
They couldn’t understand why he was right to be afraid.

He doesn’t want to die.
He doesn’t want the inevitability of it to sink into him, to settle like a chill in his bones. He wants to run, keep running, just the two of them, forever. He wants to be miserable and tired and aching and lashing out in temper – but alive.
Lactic acid burns in their muscles, the gash in their side icy hot. Christ, when was the last time they’d slept? Or their breath hadn’t caught at the bottom of each inhale? It feels like their whole life they’ve been looking over their shoulders, half sick with fear.He hears portal after portal slice through the air, the piercing summoning shriek of the things as they called more and more of their brethren to the hunt.
