“Why did you choose me?” asks Ava. She looks up at Deborah with tears caught in her eyelashes. “Why would you do that, D?”
Deborah bites her lip. There’s calculation behind her cornflower irises, her brain spinning like a roulette wheel as she tries to land on the perfect response. Eventually, she finds a truth that she feels too stripped-down, too raw to excuse away: “There was never any choice.”

Andy felt alarmed suddenly; she hadn’t heard any rumours and usually all the office gossip she immediately got from Serena. Deborah lets out a huff of an exhale and sinks down onto the cushion Ava’s feet have only just vacated. “A cruise.” Her lips curl around the words, a sneer playing about the corner of them.
“Um…why?”
Deborah’s fingers rake through her hair, and Ava can’t help thinking how much she’d like to be the one doing that instead—which is, you know, wholly inappropriate because Deb’s her boss, and also one forwarded email away from kicking Ava out on her ass. “It’s a long story.”
