He crumpled the letter, then smoothed it out again, the official seal a mocking eye staring back. He still hadn't told anyone. Not his parents. Not Till. Only Mizi knew.
Mizi's voice cut through his self-pity. "Seriously, the Air Force? What's with this stupid destiny thing you've got going on?"
"Destiny, fate, cosmic joke… pick your poison, Mizi." He shrugged, a gesture that was half-resigned, half-exasperated. "I don't know why I passed those tests. I don't know why I'm suddenly destined to be Maverick. It's ridiculous."
"Ridiculous, and you're still doing it." A long pause stretched between them. "Honestly, you could always… not go."
"And stay here?" Ivan's voice rose, a thread of desperation woven through it. "Replaying that conversation with Till for the rest of my life? No thanks. At least out there, there'll be something else to think about. Something else to focus on."
