Summary
How can he explain to Henry that there are nights when he can barely breathe, trapped in the memory of faces he couldn’t save?
“It’s not all about you, Henry! Don’t you understand? I’m trying to handle this in my own way.”
Alex’s fragile calm shatters like glass crashing to the floor, his shout echoing in the room as he turns to face his husband.
“Why won’t you let me be a part of this? Why won’t you let me help?”
“It’s not just about you and your feelings! Every time you pressure me, it feels like it’s dragging me down further. You’re suffocating me, fuck!"
Henry’s face crumples into a pained expression, as if he’s been hit physically. Alex realizes he doesn’t like shouting, but the adrenaline of the moment keeps him from stopping.
“I need space.”
“So you want space? You want me to step back while you sink?” Henry’s shoulders slump, defeated.
The silence suffocates them. Alex doesn’t know what else to say.
“I have to go. My shift starts in half an hour.”
Henry stands frozen, in the middle of the room with ragged breaths. Alex is an idiot, but still decides to leave. The sound of the door closing behind him will echo in his mind for the rest of the night.
