“Need a lift?”
Speak of the devil. Rogue looked to the side, glaring at the Doctor, frowning. “Seriously?” he said. “This again? Just leave me alone, will you?” He shook his head and focused on the Nothing in front of him again. Just keep walking until they fall asleep...
“Again?” Came the familiar voice, and Rogue had to admit he was a little impressed with how his mind managed to make the hallucinations more realistic every time. It sounded more out there than in his head now. “Rogue, I've never been here before. This is the only chance we've got.”
Rogue glanced to the side, snorting out a laugh. “Yeah, yeah,” he said. “I know. You've reversed polarity and your secondary engines are burning up while the core reactor is overheating, blah blah blah... God, I'm running out of stuff to think your shed might have.”
“I'm burning up three stars, actually. But the core reactor isn't getting a bit heated from it, so if you could drop the attitude and just get in so we can get the hell out of here, that would be fab,” the Doctor said, impatience clear in his voice.

Summary
The Doctor looks…older than Rogue remembers. Wearier. He's missing his ponytail, and he’s swapped the fancy coat and cravat for a leather jacket. To Rogue’s surprise (and a blush he’ll deny until his dying days), the Doctor is also wearing his signet ring. It suits him.
“Hi,” the hologram says. “If you’re seeing this, it means I’m not with you. I’ve been running a scan on the TARDIS, but there are an infinite number of dimensions, even for a Time Machine. I promise to keep searching, but if I see you again, it won’t be with this face.”
(Someday, another bounty hunter will scan the Doctor, and the face Rogue loves will be indistinguishable from the others.)
