His face was kind, eyes crinkled at the edges, and his hands were empty, open, palms up. He towered over her, but there was no menace in him, only a quiet concern.

    She recognized him, but the memory was distant, like a half-remembered song. Cain. Her mother’s brother, exiled and forgotten. The man who had vanished from her childhood stories.
