Summary
The city gates loomed ahead—petricite, cold and unyielding, lined with guards. They were already turning, spears braced, eyes wide with the thrill of the hunt. Lux veered left, into a warren of alleys, heart battering against her ribs. She could hear the clatter of pursuit behind her, the thud of boots and the scrape of steel.
She rounded a corner and slammed into a wall of flesh. For a wild moment she thought she had been caught, and her hands flew up in a desperate gesture, light already crackling at her fingertips.
But the man before her wasn’t a guard. He was huge—broad as a bear, with arms like tree trunks and a tangle of dark hair that tumbled over his shoulders. His face was kind, eyes crinkled at the edges, and his hands were empty, open, palms up. He towered over her, but there was no menace in him, only a quiet concern.
She recognized him, but the memory was distant, like a half-remembered song. Cain. Her mother’s brother, exiled and forgotten. The man who had vanished from her childhood stories.
