Jackie isn’t sure of herself and Shauna can’t find the words she wants to say. It feels wrong in a way that dreams do, the kind that seems real until it misses one key detail. Shauna continues to write and Jackie sits there like the silence isn’t driving her crazy, and there was once a time where this was all Shauna wanted, but she never expected it to feel like this.
Or: Shauna returns from the wilderness. She isn't sure she recognizes the Jackie Taylor she comes home to.

Summary
“Poppies, Jeff. Jackie likes poppies,” Shauna says as she walks towards the front of the class. What Shauna won’t say is that she only knows this because of the flowers that claw at her throat until she coughs them up into an open palm, petals so red she can’t tell what’s blood and what isn’t.
Shauna is dying. She knows this. She also knows exactly how to save herself, but she would rather choke on those stupid flower petals than tell Jackie how she truly feels. After all, she’s been suffocating since seventh grade when she realised the feeling in her stomach wasn’t anxiety over her third period biology test, but was instead caused by the way Jackie looked at her the previous night whilst studying at the kitchen table.

Summary
Shauna let out a small, disbelieving laugh, nodding like she couldn't believe Jackie's words.
“What? You're so fucking jealous of me you can barely breathe”. Her brows knit together as she spoke, her head moving slightly with each word.
“Are you quoting beaches at me right now”? Shauna says, her face tightening, like she couldn't tell if Jackie was joking or not.
“What… no”. Jackie looks at her like she's offended, but it comes out weaker than she intended.
“I'm not jealous of you, Jackie. I feel sorry for you”. Shauna’s voice is quiet and steady; she doesn't even pretend to be sincere.
“Because you’re weak… and I think that deep down you know it”. She steps in even closer to Jackie, not breaking eye contact.
“I'm sure everyone back home is so fucking sad to be losing their perfect little princess. But they'll never know how tragic, and boring, and insecure you really are”. Her voice builds as she goes, stepping in even closer to Jackie.
“Or how high school was the best your life was ever gonna get”. The air goes still between them.
“Fuck you”. Jackie says her voice just above a whisper.
