Gale shrugs, shaking back into his usual reticent personality. John only knows the word because he'd spied it on one of Gale's report cards, written in neat teacher cursive. He had looked it up afterward, stepping foot into the school library for the first and only time in his academic career so far.
"Something, I guess," Gale says.

Summary
When Gale smashes a backhand, and Egan lunges for it, but the quick bounce spins it just past his racket, he stumbles, catches himself on his hands with his racket clattering against the hard court, and he starts laughing, wet and winded—laughing still as he straightens up, cheeks reddened, glistening under the sun. He scrubs the back of his wrist, his black sweatband, over his forehead.
“See? You love it when I make your dad mad.”
“Egan,” Gale warns, but all the authority is lost in his panting. Egan wipes his forehead again, racket tapping his thigh.
“Missed playing with you, Buck.”
“We played two weeks ago, in Cincinnati. C’mon, still your serve.”

Gale meets John Egan at a Challenger in Bordeaux when they're both 19 years old. After that, he can't seem to shake him. But what's more is, despite what his dad says about Gale's game, and what the commentators say about their rivalry, and what he's been told about tennis his whole life, Gale doesn't think he wants to.

Summary
The last person he expects to see when he walks into detention is Gale-fucking-Cleven.
It’s not that he doesn’t like the guy; it’s just that he finds how perfect he is to be incredibly annoying. Him and his cheerleader girlfriend both look liked they walked right out of a literal magazine. And the fact that he’s the student body president, captain of the football team, and has been Homecoming King for the last two years was just doing too much in John’s opinion. Not to mention that blinding movie-star smile, with those two rows of flawless white teeth John swears he’s seen literally twinkle and a fan club to match those Hollywood-worthy good looks.
Well… now that he thinks about it, you could probably say he doesn’t like the guy.

Summary
Falling in love was not on Gale Cleven’s Paris Olympics bingo card. It is, in fact, the absolute furthest thing from his mind, City of Love be damned. It’s his first Olympics, and he’d like to focus on nothing other than his horse, his riding, and trying to bring home a medal for his team. So it’s a shame that that plan is already falling apart.
