Summary
He shows you the door frame, lines denoting his height at different ages, written on the oak with dark blue marker pen. Peter – 5, – 7, – 10, – 15, – 17. Your eyes catch another mark in red marker near the top; MJ – 16, it reads. You look back up at him and notice his attention is fixated on the same scrawl of red ink. You can't read the look he has on his face, but you realise it's something deeply private. When his eyes finally find yours again, his gaze reluctant to move, his smile takes too long to come back. You smile back halfheartedly.
Or,
You never wanted this. You kept to yourself, head down, because it's easier than the alternative. Safer. And then you let someone in and you don't think you could've helped it, really. He was a complete stranger but he felt like you'd known him for longer than you knew your own reflection.
What do you do when you fall in love with someone who loves you back, but as much as he tries, he can't quite love you as much as he loves someone else?
