There are days when the telephone doesn't ring. Alex will sit for hours flipping through the radio stations, sometimes not listening to anything at all but soaking in the white noise. She figured that Nicolas and Worick would be rolling in cash considering the high stakes in their line of work. Barry always had money or maybe not—he worked her hard like he was being squeezed. Took all of what she earned too. He split her lip with one of his wrist watches. His favorite fat golden one. The chunky links chewed at his arm hairs. Yet always strapped for cash.
That's the nature of capitalism. The words crinkle out of the static. The white noise talks to her if she listens hard enough.
