What if Penelope stood firm in her refusal and Colin had to work a little bit harder for that "yes"?(An alternate take going from the end of Chapter 13 of Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. Book Canon with a few show shout-outs.)
ETA: As some of you may have noticed, I've changed the rating from M to E. I just can't help it. There's some spicy stuff coming (something the book was sorely lacking in) and I wanted it to be just wee bit spicier than what I consider M to be (though I know such things are usually subjective).

Colin Bridgerton returns to Britain and is surprised to find that a certain Miss has struck a friendship with an eligible bachelor that is not himself. When he finds that the friendship might lead to courtship, he is perplexingly dismayed and accidentally interferes every chance he gets.
Penelope Featherington is actually looking forward to the London Season, even if she is basically a spinster. Last year she and Eloise became quick friends with Lady Lindsey, and she somehow found herself in correspondence with the Lady's younger brother, the handsome and scholarly Marquess of Stafford. And for the first time in forever, Penelope is able to push thoughts of the always absent Colin Bridgerton from her mind.
