Summary
Eddie freezes at the doorway, tray in hand, the voices drifting from inside stopping him cold.
“Oh, your stepdad doesn’t live with you?” Mark asks, gesturing to a framed photo of Buck and Christopher.
There’s a beat of silence—too long, too loaded.Eddie’s heart stutters, thudding hard against his ribs as he waits, breath held. God's really decided to test him today.
Then Christopher answers, casually, like it’s the easiest thing in the world. “No… he lives in L.A.”
or Eddie overhears a conversation between Christopher and his friend, then proceeds to spiral about being in love with Buck while also being insanely jealous of 118's new recruit

Summary
Buck would look up for a split moment, a languid smile adorning his face, his eyes barely open, probably forgetting his surroundings for a moment—this is exactly how he looks now. Blissed and content.
Buck holds her in his arms, Jee partially on his lap, the spread of his fingers on the back of her head, his thumb occasionally tracing her eyebrows and the slope of her nose. Jee was fighting sleep as she struggled to keep her eyes open, stifling her yawns as she stretched and cuddled deeper into herself in her Uncle’s warmth.
Or: Three times where Buck put Jee, Chris, and Eddie to sleep. And the one time Eddie puts Buck to sleep.

Summary
“Are you upset that we came back, or something? I told you that we’d find a different place if you—”
“Stop, Eddie. No, of course not. That’s not the—it’s fine. Really.” Buck pulled in a deep breath, shaking his head. “It’s time for me to find my own place. It’s a good thing.” He leaned forward to grab their beers from the coffee table, passing Eddie his. “Sorry for snapping at you. It’s just been a long day.”
Eddie nodded, swallowing hard, the animal in his chest retreating a little. “Yeah. Me too.”
“Anyway, I’ve got a promising tour tomorrow,” Buck continued, voice carefully neutral. “A friend of Maddie’s from nursing school has a brother who’s moving out, so. We’ll see. He’s about our age, elementary teacher or something, so the place can’t be that expensive.” Buck shrugged. “Got a pretty good feeling about it.”
“That’s good,” Eddie said, though the next sip of his beer tasted bitter on his tongue.or, post 8x18, buck finds a boyfriend, an apartment, and eddie loses his mind about it

Summary
“Buck—”
Buck’s voice rose, teetering on the edge of desperation. “And now, you’re just gone? Chris mentions chess club, and it’s all, ‘oh, I guess I have to uproot my entire life and move back to El Paso’? I mean, what’s—”
“Careful,” Eddie warned, and Buck scoffed.
“I’m sorry, but seriously? That’s all it takes? What about the 118? What about—”
“You?”
Buck stopped short, breath halting as if Eddie had stuck a knife between his ribs.—
or, Post 8x08, Buck and Eddie deal poorly with their feelings, and Buck gets shot. Not necessarily in that order.

Summary
It’s such a small thing, and yet Buck feels almost like he’s intruding by catching the moment, seeing it in its quiet intimacy.
He glances away, down at his own hands, and thinks rather wistfully, heart clenching something fierce in his chest: I’m never going to get that.
And it’s not the first time Buck’s had that thought; probably not even the tenth, or the hundredth. His brain tends to work a mile a minute, which means he’s used to things flitting through, sometimes with impact, sometimes without.
Now, though, it catches.
Sticks sharp and tacky in his mind.
I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that.
Or: Buck thinks he’s unlovable. (Or or: Buck goes through it.)
