“Why’re you here?” Steve doesn’t mean for it to come out so blunt, but the shock of seeing Eddie here is enough to startle any manners he has left right out of him. “I told you I’m sick.”
“Uh, yeah, exactly,” Eddie says in a duh sort of voice. “You’re sick. And you’re home alone. So I brought you flowers and soup and some other shit, and I’m going to stay here and take care of you.”
“I can take care of myself,” he protests, and is immediately thrown into a coughing fit so intense it doubles him right over.
“I’m sure you can, tough guy,” Eddie says, pressing a kiss to his cheek. Steve can feel the curve of his smile against his skin and leans into it with a sigh. “But maybe you don’t have to. Ever think of that?”

“Whoa ,” Mike says, voice hoarse and writhed with sleep, grasping the arm of Will’s sweater with impressive force, in his dream-like quality. Will doesn’t remember when he began slipping off the side of the roof. “Will, — Will,” Mike murmurs, and Will melts at the sheer familiarity of his name on Mike’s mouth, “come inside. You’ll hurt yourself.”
His heels won't move from where they’ve dug into the roof, despite Mike’s persistent tugging. All at once, he’s washed over with guilt. He shouldn’t be here. He’ll hurt him.
“Please,” Mike adds, the single syllable addictive and slow, like honey.
It’s embarrassing how fast Will folds.
Will wakes from a nightmare on the other side of town. He finds going home is easier said than done.

Summary
Nestled in the hills in Appalachia lies Walland, TN, Eddie's hometown, and the place where he loses his childhood best friend. it drives him insane, and he struggles to come to grips with it all.
he makes friends with Steve. Steve pulls him out of his funk, makes Eddie feel more like himself again. They quickly became inseparable. Steve is Eddie's Hawkins version of Sam.
So, when Eddie and Wayne go back to Walland for their yearly visit in October, Steve goes too. Somewhere along the way, he realizes he loves Steve.
Eddie is terrified he'll lose him too if he gets too close.

“Leave me!” The boy repeated, insistent now, and Eddie’s hand felt wet against the boy’s face now. He realized with a pang that he was crying.
From his position in the doorway, Eddie could see into the lounge, and his stomach dropped at the sight of several empty pill packets on the coffee table, moonlight glinting off them.
“Nah, I’m not gonna do that,” Eddie murmured to him, and he pulled the boy closer, ignoring his weak protests and guiding his head into his lap. “S’alright, I gotcha.”
