    Summary

I remember where I was when they found the plane.

That’s what people always say, isn’t it? Like tragedy only counts if you can timestamp it—if you can say “I was there, I remember.”

When they said it was the Hawkins Boys’ Soccer Team, my stomach dropped before they even confirmed it. Eighteen kids, one coach, three chaperones, and a radio operator. Gone over the woods on their way to State. For weeks, the parents lined the hallways, clinging to flyers and faith, and I told them what a principal’s supposed to—that we’d keep the lights on, that miracles happen.

    Then they found the wreckage.

Nineteen months later, the survivors came home. They were different—like they’d brought something back with them from the cold, the heat, the in between. Something that still lingers in the way the wind moves through the trees behind the school.

I remember where I was when they found the plane.
    I’m
What I can’t forget is what came after.
