And just like that, Barney readjusted. His routine was a science, maybe one precise enough for the cranky whitecoats to respect.
But, as with any science, unexpected variables tended to show up and make things a bit more interesting.
------

Summary
Every so often, the haze of instinct clears and his mind is made well-aware of the reality before him. After trudging through hallways of chaos and death and killing completely unfazed, he'll happen upon a body dressed in blue. No matter how many times Gordon sees a dead guard, he can't become numb to it. His heart pounds, his blood runs cold, and his steps grow heavy.
Every time, he bears the dread that pools deep in his stomach as he waits for his world to end for the second time that day. He wills himself to stare down at the corpse, mind zeroed in on a single question. He breathes a shaky sigh of relief when he doesn't see the face of Barney Calhoun.

Gordon and Barney reunite in the midst of the Resonance Cascade.

Benrey liked it when things were like that. Clear and simple answers. Yes or no. Good guy or bad guy.

Summary
"You can tell me anything, dude." Bill leaned forward across the stained picnic table, looking him in the eyes intently.
There wasn't much use in trying to hide this kind of stuff from Bill. "It's my dad. He said some truly heinous things this morning, and for some reason they're stuck in my brain."
"Heinous? Well perhaps telling me what they were might help."
"Well," he said, considering his phrasing, "Maybe heinous isn't the correct word. More like peculiar."
Bill raised an eyebrow. "Peculiar?"
"Peculiar." Ted affirmed.

Summary
The toad, the thing, leaps straight up into the air — and in a burst of violet light, it explodes. Barney flinches back — but in between blinks the thing’s gone, sparks and all, leaving behind only a patch of disturbed sand.
For a moment, Barney’s little oasis is nearly silent. Black Mesa hums beside him and the wind tears through the desert. He stares at the spot the toad had just been, blinking away the pink and violet aftermath.
“What,” Barney whispers, “in the goddamned fuck.”Bookmarked by aqua_orbit
