Summary
The memory of V jumping from cover, hurling insults at Adam Smasher to catch his attention, will forever be ingrained in Johnny’s past as one of the worst events he’s witnessed. The mercenary selflessly sacrificed himself so Johnny and his team could flee, getting himself torn to shreds in the process. It was a nightmare that plagued Johnny, a recollection of his greatest failures, of everything he tried to accomplish and was never strong enough to.
Now, in 2077, there’s rumors of a man quickly working his way up the ranks of edgerunners – a man who goes by the name of V. It must be a coincidence, up until the mysterious merc shows up in the Afterlife, and he looks just like the man that sacrificed himself for Johnny fifty-four years ago.

The blush deepened as he suddenly became very interested in finishing the bottled water and not the fact that Johnny was making fun of him for having a crush on his old bandmate.
“Oh don’t do that. Been there, done that. ‘Least you got taste in dudes.” He waved his hand feeling V’s embarrassment.
V stopped drinking and a lopsided grin replaced the blush.
“What?”
“You think I got taste?”
“Stop it. Wipe that stupid fuckin’ look off your face.”
“It’s my face, Johnny. I can’t help it.”
Johnny scoffed and rolled his eyes.

They lie there in silence for a little bit, V running his fingers lazily through Johnny’s hair. He lets out a satisfied sigh. ‘Not bad, Silverhand.’
Johnny props himself up on his elbow, staring down at V with his eyebrow cocked. ‘That all you got? “Not bad”?’
V laughs. ‘What were you expecting? I ain’t one of your groupies.’ He smiles. ‘And I think you like that.’
‘I do, actually,’ Johnny admits.
‘Good.’

Johnny's been on the road with Santiago's Aldecaldos for years. Upon their return to California, Johnny meets V, yet another nomad, who seems to have a strange ability to put him at ease. When Johnny decides to return to Night City, V comes with him. Johnny wants to bring Samurai back together, and to do that there's one person he needs more than anybody else: Kerry Eurodyne. Kerry, who hasn't seen Johnny in six years and is really pissed.
