“He killed everyone I loved,” Jiang Wanyin rasps again.
“And you still tried. And,” Lan Wangji thinks of the other cave, the one that smelled of blood and resentment, the cave where he’d held Wei Ying together as best he could for three nightmarish months as Wei Ying cursed and wept and the imminent siege bore down, get lost, get lost—“and failed?”
Jiang Wanyin bites him.
