Niki was sure her lurching stomach and ever-quickening pulse were actively trying to raise several objections to the frantic sprint she now found herself in. Sprinting away from the ghosts, away from her family, away from her home, Niki pounded the ash-coated dirt with every ounce of energy she had left. As smog from the graying, painted-in-rocket fuel skies filled her lungs, she knew that the only thing ticking faster than her exhaustion was time itself.
And time was a fickle thing for Niki. It was running out.
