"Kiyoomi watches through the windows as the cake he made with his mother this afternoon cooks slowly. His mother sits quietly in front of the oven watching the dough rise, both her son and she enjoying the warmth of the kitchen. Kiyoomi scrutinizes the horizon, he feels outside movement and life, he guesses his father and brothers coming back from getting buckets of snow, he hears his sister talking to the sheep.
