The surprise is apparent on his face and in his aura, but it’s not dismay at her having the audacity to even ask. It’s a ‘you live in a suite with four of your girlfriends but you want to talk to me?’ kind of bewilderment, from someone who’s not used to being a legitimate choice for sensitive subject matters. And he clearly knows that’s what this is, because his voice softens when he finally replies.
“Yeah. Of course you can.”
Her arms tighten around her knees. “It’s about my mom.”
“Are you sure?” He straightens up a little. “You don’t owe me an explanation, about any of that.”
“I think I’ve been wanting to tell someone for a while.” That’s not quite true, and if she’s not going to be honest, there’s no point to this. “I’ve been wanting to tell you, for a while.”
