    He swallowed, nodded, then swallowed again. A cicada hummed in the distance. A bead of sweat dripped down the side of your neck. Shane leaned forward slowly, keeping his eyes on yours, as though not fully trusting that you wouldn’t stop him.

    Haley scoffs at you, looking severely unimpressed. “I thought you were gonna kiss me—one of those passionate, ‘shut the fuck up’ ones.”

    “Oh.” You say, and then, “What?”

    “You’re honestly clueless.” She sighs. “Only God knows why I thought you were hot enough to talk to.”

    That throws you for another loop. If this is how she treats the people she’s flirting with, how exactly does she treat the people she sincerely cares for? You’re not sure you want to find out. “You’ve been flirting this entire time?”

    “Uh, yeah.” Haley rolls her eyes, leveling you with a look that tells you she thinks you're stupid.
