“Don’t look now,” says Hunter in a low, firm voice, “but there’s another one coming up on your left.”
“Thorns.”
He’s right. If it weren’t for the near obnoxiously mournful moans and groans of the specter in front of her, Willow would have caught the clinks of a laden key ring fast approaching. Hunter quickly readjusts them so that they’re back-to-back, enough that she’s able to cut a swift warding knot into the air with the blade of her rapier. The shade recoils instantly, stilling, and she can’t help but feel a little worried. If things have already escalated three hours into darkness, that’s not a good sign.
“Any luck?”
“Groundskeeper.” She sighs, taking in the state of him. It’s tricky to catch a proper glimpse, seeing as that isn’t her area of expertise, but when she flits her gaze front and center to catch him out of the corner of her eye, she’s able to pick up on some resemblance of the human form. In life, he’d probably been quite a jolly fellow, if the crows feet were anything to go by. In death, well.
Let’s just say he didn’t have much left to smile with.
