    Summary

Beyond the glass, the sun was setting in earnest. The light had faded to some final rivulets of red, and the shadows inside the Church were stretching, like long lines of black-clotted blood.

Francesco carefully prised himself away from Cirrus, but there was no truly moving away; Cirrus kept their hands hopelessly entwined. Then, Cirrus’s other hand came up to capture Francesco’s cheek, preventing him from even turning away.

“The Lunar God has blessed us tonight,” Cirrus told him.

    Summary

The figure abruptly leans in, then, and Vesper’s heart beats frantically; the small space left between them hums with tension. Their chests are almost flush.

Vesper doesn’t feel a single mote of warmth from the body opposite theirs.

    Summary

Oleander could handle a gaggle of admirers following him through a grand hall, or a crowd clustered around him as he perched on a piece of gilded furniture, or a wary apothecary glaring at him through the dark smoke that choked their brewing room.

    He couldn't handle this.

    Summary

It feels indecent. No – it certainly is.

You are watching a priest undress, your sin-stained thoughts remind you. This is far beyond merely indecent.

    This is sacrilege.

    Summary

As Keir pushed open the door, Griff trudged to the table and took a seat on one of its two rickety chairs, trying very much to convince himself that he wasn’t sulking.

And then, Keir came to sit in the chair opposite him.

    Summary

“Look at me,” Oleander said, as the last of Keir’s mask fell away, and they pulled apart to take a much-needed breath.

Keir drank in the rare sight of the other man’s eyes, dark and ringed with darker lashes, pupils blown out as they fixed entirely on him.

Softly, Oleander told him, “I’m yours.”

    Summary

The hunger gnaws at them – it's impossible to ignore, clawing as it is at their cold, dead flesh. Even here, beneath the dizzyingly high ceilings of the Church, there is no salvation.

For the first time in their miserable unlife, Vesper shakily puts their hands together and assumes the posture to pray.
