22 year old Liz Milhoan attends Bethesda University in order to gain her master's degree in English Literature; While there, she meets Raymond Reddington, a 50-something year old tenured professor, who is captivated by the lovely, intelligent Ms. Milhoan. From the moment he sees her, speaks to her, challenges her, his life is forever changed. Liz, meanwhile, is intrigued by the professor, and determined to learn more about him, outside the class room.
