How I imagine them meeting (or 5 things Jade learns about the princess and one thing Kit tells her).

“I’m Jade,” she tells the princess, but can’t manage to catch her gaze. As she stares, she waits for Kit to say or do something. But it’s only when she gives up and turns to leave that the princess manages to respond.
“I need you to stay,” she rushes out, and it catches Jade so off guard she almost gets whiplash when she turns back around.
“Your highness-”
But Kit looks up at her then, making real eye contact for the first time, and it crushes the air out of Jade’s chest. It feels strange, getting watched so directly when Kit's been so stealthy until now. Like her soul's bared for judgment.
The princess has weaponized her attention, and it pays off.
“I want you to stay.”
It tugs at her heartstrings.
“Don’t worry, highness,” Jade turns around for the last time. “I’ll watch over you.”
