“Come home with me,” Sarah rushes to say before Ellie can launch into any excuses about loving her own time and space and quiet. She’s sure that there’s some degree of truth to it, but Sarah’s calling bull on Ellie actually wanting to be entirely alone in the freezing, blustery landscape of a Massachusetts winter instead of flying out to Wyoming and spending a few weeks together.
“Sarah…”
“No! No, it’ll be fun, okay? We can do all of my favorite holiday things like bake cookies and watch movies and go shopping. I hate going shopping alone! And my dad already said that you can come, and it’s our first Christmas since he moved up to Wyoming, and it’ll just be…nice if you’re there too.” Everything was already going to be so different, to feel so different. So maybe this difference could be something good. Sarah could stand a chance to look forward to along with all of the change that she was…making the best of. “I want you there too.”

or: Sarah can't stand the concept of Ellie being left all alone over the holidays. Ellie doesn't know if she can stomach forcing her way into some other family's Christmas. And Joel just wants to get it all right.

Joel was a cop. After a long day of responding to different calls, he was heading home. Then he got the call. It was just another call. Another missing kid. It would be just like any other call. And then it wasn't. As soon as Joel saw that girl, Ellie, that terrified little girl, he knew that she wasn't leaving his life anytime soon. In that house, where he'd saved her from a monster, they found each other.
TLDR// Modern-fic. Joel is a cop and takes in a very traumatized Ellie. It wasn't long after he lost Sarah. And he wasn't planning on being anything but alone for the rest of his life, but then, Ellie changed all of that.

Summary
He got Sarah killed. He didn’t trust himself to keep Ellie safe. She deserved someone who would keep her safe. Joel wasn’t that. He thought that she’d be safer without him, and he didn’t realize how wrong he was.
TLDR// Joel is Ellie’s father, but he gives her away. When, by mere coincidence, he is tasked with smuggling a girl, it happens to be the baby that he gave away fourteen years ago. The entirety of part one still happens, but their relationship is clearly defined for them, and Ellie has to work on forgiving him.
