Summary
Ilya was good at noticing things about people, and he was good at understanding them. Shane was not. That was okay. Shane had developed his own way of getting to know Ilya. It involved a lot of inane questions and, more importantly, no longer involved condoms.

“There’s a trend going on in the comments,” Connors explains. “#RobotShane.”
“Robot?” Ilya repeats, confused.
“Because he’s so stiff in interviews. Like a machine.”
“And this is funny?”
“Oh, come on,” Cliff says, exasperated. “I know you and Shane are friends now, or whatever, since you started the charity -”
“Listen to this!” Connors interrupts. “‘#RobotShane would probably be a lot less stiff if he spent more of his off-time getting stiff.’”
Everyone laughs again, as if they’ve just heard a particularly hilarious joke, rather than a Youtube comment most likely written by a twelve-year-old.
“Do we think Shane even knows what sex is?” St-Simon snickers. “He probably just powers down in a corner in between games.”

“You really wouldn’t mind if I had sex with someone else?”
Turns out, Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, hearing those exact words come out of Shane’s mouth, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time.
But Ilya swallows back the bitter truth and replies instead into the phone, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly; he was sure Shane could hear it, who had gone completely quiet. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally replied, “Okay. If that's what you want.”
OR: inspired by the fight in TLG where Ilya tells Shane he can sleep with other men. But this time, Shane actually takes the offer.
