Behind the mask, Vader was still anakin, severely resigned, but still burning on. Because deep down, Vader's worldview was more rose-tinted than Maul's worldview could ever be, more naive and pure than the old Count's cynicism. As tragic as it was, it would take more than Mustafar's flames to burn out Anakin's optimism from Vader's heart. may no longer be a jedi. But he was still a slave from tatooine, too stubborn to die for his own good.
