[Also: this work is rated mature for reasons that will reveal themselves soon enough! Haha.]
Hi! Do you like reading about oddly theatrical government corruption? Well, maybe, just maybe, you should give the Sabbatical a try. Have fun getting caught up in weirdly intimate tension, secret identities, unnecessarily long names, and counterterrorism plots! Who doesn't love counterterrorism plots?
Please give this a read. I beg.
(Chapter 1 Summary):
Voltaire Marion goes on a little advertising trip and passes out much to his inconvenience.

Summary
“Education is the food of youth, the delight of the old, the ornament of prosperity, the refuge and comfort of adversity, and the provocation to grace in the soul.”
— Saint AugustineThe Pope is trying to learn...a new skill, but it's hard to look into these things when the entire world is looking into *you.* The secretary of the college of cardinals is surprisingly understanding.

Vienna, 1760s. Roderich von Edelstein, heir to an old house, has been given a Swiss Guard: Basch Zwingli, soldier, shadow, vow. Duty says they must stand apart. Desire makes the distance unbearable. What begins with buttoned collars and borrowed silence unravels into something neither of them should want—and both of them can’t let go of.

Summary
There they sit, and for this their minute of quietude, Guildenstern allows himself to be ignorant of the strange happenings about them, and of the Prince, and of the blasphemous incest which had plunged the whole country into this tragedy of errors. He thinks only of Rosencrantz, who now leans into him and the weight of his trust in Guildenstern’s hands.
“Perhaps we ought to have sex,” Rosencrantz eventually offers.
“…What?” Guildenstern turns to him. Perplexity is a muffling sort of emotion and settles first upon the ears before the mind.
“Have sex. Y’know. Intercourse.” Rosencrantz says this shamelessly, as though he is speaking of the weather.
“We are having intercourse.”
Perhaps Rosencrantz does not know what he is saying.
“I mean biblically.”
Or perhaps he does. -

Summary
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Renaissance gentlemen, from their young days brought up together at the Danish royal court with the crown prince of Denmark. Now students, they’re enjoying themselves immensely at Wittenberg University – perhaps a little too much, their contemporaries might argue. Carefree bordering on careless. Indulging in food, drink, and – behind closed doors – each other.
Unfortunately, they will be summoned back to Elsinore, where the walls have ears and secrets can be fatal. This fic is about the characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but I’m also drawing from their extended characterization and dynamic in Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. So these are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who have to navigate court intrigue, not timeloop amnesia, but they still play questions.
Fair warning that these characters remain in their historic setting and will not have the vocabulary we have today to describe their actions and feelings.
