When they have licked the last grains from their fingers and cleansed their palates with tea, Osamu clears his throat. “I wanna open up an onigiri joint,” he says firmly, eyes trained on the horizon. “Make it a restaurant, maybe a few across the city if I can.”
“You will.”
Osamu turns to Shinsuke and clasps his shoulder. His hand is warm through Shinsuke’s thin shirt, thumb just brushing the sensitive skin on his neck. Osamu leans in, vibrant as a live wire. “I want your rice for my shop.”
Shinsuke shouldn't be surprised when Osamu comes to him with a question. The question.

Summary
“When’s your birthday?” Senjuro asked. The boy of six years looked up from his spot on Ruka’s lap. She looked frailer, the bones in her hands and wrist more prominent than three months ago. Her body was wasting away to an unknown disease. Though he lived here for nearly a year he still jumped when she made sudden movements or raised her voice. For his benefit she tried to stay within his field of vision as his right eye was nearly blind.
“In the fall when the leaves start to turn,” Obanai answered. He never had the chance to ask his family the exact date. They told him his age changed each year when the leaves changed from green to yellow and eventually brown as they died. How befitting for the boy who murdered his family. Each leaf falling, never to recover or change.
Ruka studied him and he shifted uncomfortably. The Rengokus had intense eyes no matter how they softened their brows. Noticing his discomfort she looked down at her youngest son.
“If you don’t know the exact date, you can share my birthday, Obanai,” Ruka said.
