The residents of the Cloud Recesses knew not to stare impolitely. Summary
Lan Zhan does not speak, but that’s okay. He is praised—as much as the sect will allow—from his first day of lessons, and the compliments continue thereafter. It should come as no surprise to any Lan that he surpasses the other students so soon, but the teachers take it as such, what with his silence, his lowered gaze, his fists clenched tight when another child is loud; he is unmoving, a carved example, perfection of the worrying kind. He is nothing like his brother, his father, his uncle.
But he is the first to learn to write. It’s all okay.
