Julius thought of appa trees, his own scent, an image of his brother forcibly overlaid on top of a Sin Archbishop. It was a long time flaw of his in a string of failures. If Otto wanted to bleed out his resentment into Julius, Julius could not hate him for it. Julius was a coward who never fought the duel he wanted, who let the voices of brothers and friends fizzle out into uncertain silence. I thought I was in your shadow, Otto said. He hadn’t needed to say it for Julius to grasp that truth about him. At that rate, Vollachia had been their first official meeting: as rivals, Otto shaking with rage, and as acquaintances, Otto trembling as Julius lived up to his lady and his missing friend and gave into greed.
Yet acquaintances did not kiss each other like this. Julius was just certain that Otto wanted to drive him mad.
When Otto falls ill, Julius gets a little more than he bargained for.
