Summary
Here is a story that never happened.
December 1909. A Royal Geographical Society function. Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott find themselves hiding behind the same curtain.
They could acknowledge it. Laugh about it. Roald could tell Scott of his plans—the two could feverishly compare notes on the Antarctic: designs, schemes, desires, and dreams could flow behind the safety of the curtain.
But no. They are creatures of the real world, the masked world, the staged world. There does not exist a universe so free.
Even in the wings, they play the fools.

Summary
They are perfectly alone on the sea, the Terra Nova winding through a belt of half-formed sea ice. The days grow long in the warmth of the first December. Here, the sun never sets; just dips below the horizon, and so the joy could go on forever. Cherry hopes it does. No other day could ever be so filled with pleasures, with gold and green and lilac.

Summary
There is a whole litany of apologies and compliments– could these just be formalities?– and yes, yes, Wilson writes, I would very much like to come to lunch with you. Friday next, in fact, at 1’ o’clock, which is all too soon.
I really don’t know how to deal with a man like you, Wilson had written, in his lovely looping script. Scott sets the letter down on the desk, lest his palms grow damp.
He decides it means nothing because that is easier than attempting to decipher what it all might mean to Wilson, with his clear and canny mind. He picks up the pen. Friday next, at 1’ o’ clock.

Summary
"I like it."
"—so there's no need to make a…what?"
It had been rather a blurt, and my cheeks were a little hot as I repeated, "I like your fluff. Immensely, actually. It's one of my favourite parts of you. I don't like to see you bothered about it."
Birdie began to laugh, and then stopped at my indignant look. "Oh you're—you're being serious. Well that's… I mean… why would you?"
