”What kind of dream was it then?”
”It’s… hard to describe…”, said Thorin, hesitating, and got up from his chair to pace about the room, thinking, contemplating. “On a surface level it was… it was a good dream. Wonderful even. Or it would have been, if not for… I-…”
”You’re not making any sense, Thorin”, said Balin and got up from his chair, walking up to Thorin and making him halt his restless movements by putting a steady hand onto his shoulder. “Explain it to me, what did you see in the dream?”
”I saw… I saw the Shire. And I saw Bilbo”

Or: Years after Bilbo left the Mountain, Thorin, who’s been hopelessly pining ever since, starts having dreams of him. While he’s dealing with dwarven court drama, the obsession with the dreams starts to consume him until he finds out they’re a lot more than what they seemed at first.

    Summary

In the Fifth Age of Middle Earth, Thorin Durin is a driven academic, a professor of dwarven history specialising in ancient Khuzdul and dwarven runes.

When he is given the opportunity to join an excavation of an ancient dwarven kingdom, he hopes to be able to find proof of his theory that the dwarves of old used runes to cast magic, a theory discredited by most of the academic community.

Instead he finds something else in the ruins. Something powerful and ancient and strange.

Something that is calling to him to set it free.

    Summary

“I - I don’t want to have to want,” you say, trying to find the words for the monstrous beast that has darkened your heart, bound your chest. You want something bad: the sweetening of a moment of fear and hopelessness, the embrace of knowing you truly have no choices left to make. “I don’t want you to feel that you have to ask. I want you to - to take everything from me and I want to just - “ A shaky breath rattles through you.

“Surrender,” Astarion finishes. You nod gratefully, but then another word begins to appear within your mind like forming smoke, the tendril of the monster, and then there is the heart of it, the signaling fire. The finality you crave.

“I want to fight. And then - to lose. I want to lose,” you breathe.
