Dean looks nothing close to his 22 years right now. John only sees his little boy, vulnerable and needy and grieving. He’s got the same shell shocked look he had on his face at four years old, the first time his world was snatched away. At least then, in the immediate aftermath anyways, he was young and innocent enough to not quite appreciate the enormity of what he’d lost.
Sammy’s leaving has torn him into little pieces all over again, and the broken shards are rattling around inside of him so loud that John can hear them in Dean’s every quivering breath. This time, Dean understands what’s happened perfectly: Sammy just doesn’t love Dean the way Dean loves him. He thinks he’s too special to hunt evil with his brother and his father. Honestly, John has seen this coming for years. But Dean? Well, Dean is a little more naive. Never once has it occurred to the kid that he can’t trust the people he calls his family.
And god, he’s trusting now. He doesn’t even flinch when John’s hand comes down on his thigh. Doesn’t pull away when John flutters his lips over the nape of his boy’s neck and whispers, “Why don’t you let me take care of you?”
