For a second, it feels absurd. Shaking his hand. As if she hadn’t been naked in his bed less than four weeks ago. But Belly reaches out anyway. "I’m Isabel,” she says evenly. “But all my friends call me Belly.”
There’s the slightest pause. He raises an eyebrow, just a fraction, just enough to register. “Nice to meet you,” he says.
Just like that. Like they’re strangers.
So that’s what they’re doing. Good.

AU where Belly didn’t grow up with the Fisher brothers.
Belly Conklin is at Stanford for one day only: a PhD interview, a possible future, and then back to the life she already has waiting for her on the East Coast. Jeremiah, one of her best friends, tries to set her up with a campus tour from his brother, but it never happens.
Instead, after one awkward encounter, Belly meets Conrad Fisher by accident in a café.
That should have been all it was: a chance encounter, a missed connection, one unforgettable night, and a misunderstanding big enough to send them back to their separate lives.
Months later, they find each other again without realizing how closely their lives have already been intertwining all along.
Some connections are easy to walk away from.
This isn’t one of them.

I’m close enough now that I can see the pulse thrumming in the hollow of her throat—fast, erratic, terrified. The mask of indifference has completely dissolved, replaced by something jagged and cruel. "I remember the way you looked at me when I was between your legs. Does Jere know about that? Does he know that while he was snoring three feet away, you were screaming into a pillow because of me?"

"Belly, look, in all seriousness," he says, catching his breath but still grinning, "you can't hire an escort. I can’t believe Agnes actually suggested that."
My eyes widen. "Oh my god, Conrad, no! She wasn't suggesting I hire an escort. She was suggesting..."
The words die in my throat. I trail off, looking at him—really looking at him—and realise there is no version of reality where I can comfortably say, 'She was suggesting you pretend to be my fake boyfriend so I can trick my ex into thinking I'm dating a brilliant, brooding Stanford doctor.'
"What?" Conrad asks, his smile softening into something more curious, more focused.
"What'd I miss?" Agnes’s voice cuts through the air as she slides back into the booth, drink in hand, sounding way too cheerful for someone who just abandoned her post. She looks between us, her eyebrows practically reaching her hairline when she sees how close we’re sitting.
