Dunk’s just a lad from Cork who secured a full scholarship to Oxford… He feels inadequate— coming from a humble background and suddenly surrounded by hyphenated last names and signet rings. He hopes to not make a fool of himself.
Aerion’s family is facing a political embarrassment, the Targaryens may be asset “rich” and title rich, but being a Lord doesn’t pay the maintenance bills of their summer homes. And Aerion’s grandfather just lost the London Mayoral elections, so that’s even a bigger embarrassment. His family’s broke, and he’s trying to save face in Oxford.
They meet via a fresher’s party… and oh my god someone is in deep DENIAL.
TLDR: Lovable and humble Dunk meets pretty boy Aerion trying to keep afloat in a world where his family is losing its grip. Dunk becomes his anchor.

“Does it hurt, Ser?” Egg asked curiously, as he leaned in to glance at the oozing skin on the alpha’s side.
Dunk gave him an incredulous look. “Yes it hurts. Bastard stuck me like a pig.”
“You squealed like a pig too,” Egg said brazenly.
Dunk frowned. “Only cravens strike at someone’s back. I had not been expecting him.”
“And only fools expect brigands to fight with honor,” a voice said coolly, and Dunk and Egg both whipped their heads around.
Aerion stood tall in the doorway, his dark eyes narrowed in anger.
Or, Dunk gets himself injured during a skirmish. Aerion is not pleased about this.

When Dunk goes to dismount from his horse he stumbles, and Egg scrambles to help him as he cries out for his brother. “Aerion!”
It was but a moment before the omega came storming from the front of the formation, his expression peeved. “What is it you little wretch?”
Egg’s face purples. “Don’t call me that!” He burst out. “And Ser Duncan has fallen ill from a rotten egg!”
Aerion gives Egg a queer look. “What?” He snaps, before looking towards Dunk, his eyes widening.
“It’s not from an egg you fool,” he hisses out. “He’s going into rut.”
Egg blinks at him. “Oh,” he says simply.
Oh, Dunk thought.
Dunk goes into rut on the route to Summerhall. Aerion grudgingly helps him through it.

Dunk felt small as the omega glared at him. “What did you expect to happen here, hmm?” He asked mockingly.
Dunk said nothing, his tongue thick in his mouth.
The princeling’s face sneered. “You think I am the first prince to be tied to some lowly peasant?”
“No m’lord,” Dunk stuttered, only to realize that the omega wasn’t truly searching for an answer.
“And you’re stupid too,” he jeered.
The alpha hunched in on himself, thick as a castle wall, he was.
“You will speak of this to no one,” the princeling commanded. “Do you understand me?”
Dunk meets his soulmate. It doesn’t go well.
