He had said it out loud. He had told Will how lovely he looked. How could he be so dumb, Will must think he’s some kind of freak now.
Panicked, Mikes starts stuttering out an excuse, “I-uh sorry I wasn't trying to be weird or anything Will, really, I’m sor-”
He never gets to finish his sentence when Will interrupts him, something akin to hope lacing his words.
“Do you think I’m lovely?”
Mike is at a loss for words, and doesn’t know how to answer that, but Mike knows the answer and he just said it out loud. There's no point denying it now, he knows that, but to actually face it and talk to- to Will - who all this is about, about it is not something he has been preparing for.

“I apologised for being bullshit and..” he trails off and Mike wants to ask him - was it obvious, all along? Had it been obvious to everyone else, that he wasn't actually in love with El? And for how long? He doesn't want to think about it, just the thought makes his stomach twist with guilt.
"And what?”
Mike decides to tell him. He wants Will to be the first person to officially know that he and Eleven have broken up - for good. He doesn't know why, but he thinks Will will appreciate the closeness of it.

It's been two months since the ending of season 4, when Eleven decides to break up with Mike. Not long after, Will and Mike are made to share a bedroom, so they can free up some space in the basement, where Will and Jonathan had previously been staying. With Will returning to Hawkins, his connection to the Upside Down is growing stronger, and Mike will do anything to keep Will safe - even if that means confronting his own feelings towards Will.
