But he wasn't. He never had a girl, for one thing, nor a bike. He lingered to smoke, but never for all that long. His face was youthful, but he was as tall as Phil, and when the summer turned cool and the kids went back to class during the day, he remained.

Summary
Dan still can't quite believe what words came out of their mouths live on the internet in front of an audience that is not wholly theirs. He couldn't resist calling Phil his; even if he couched it in a joke, he hopes the truth of it came across, translated through pixels and screens as the claim that it was meant to be.
And, of course, Phil wouldn't just let him get away with that, not without making a claim of his own, much more obfuscated, but no less devastating for what it is.
