Meng Yao grips his knees tightly in the carriage, eyes downturned even if no one is looking. His skin burns everywhere Lan Xichen touched it: the diffuse warmth of his hands through Meng Yao’s sleeves where he raised him from a bow, a glancing touch at his shoulder he doesn’t think the clan leader even noticed, and his hand, his hand. Meng Yao rubs his right thumb over the arch of his left hand, the span of his left index. Goosebumps shiver across his body. Meng Yao rages at himself. He has nearly forgotten how to breathe.
He closes his eyes and sees Lan Xichen’s smile. It is criminal, that smile. It is unspeakable. A slap in the face is what it is, that gentleness, that unguarded kindness—an open-handed slap that knocks him to his knees. It is a weapon Lan Xichen does not know the power of and should not be trusted to wield. It is unforgivable.
It is unforgettable.
Meng Yao needs more of it.
